I used the Wubi installer for Ubuntu, and selected the "Visibility Aids - Screen Reader" accessibility profile. Now, how do I bring up Ubuntu so that Orca is started? I've got Windows XP on the computer already, and Wubi added
c:wubildr.mbr=Ubuntu
to boot.ini. When I choose Ubuntu from the boot loader, how do I start Orca?
After you log in, press alt+f2, and type in orca.
How do I know when to log in? I get what appears to be a pale-colored screen, which is blank, then it switches to a screen that is a dark color around the edges and brighter in the middle, if that helps at all. And how do I log in? I'm just getting started with Linux, so I don't know much about this sort of stuff. Do I enter my username, then tab for pwd? Or is it username, Enter, then pwd, Enter?
When logging onto a Ubuntu system, it's username, enter, pasword, enter. On an unaltered Ubuntu system, you'll get a couple of drum beets as your auditory login prompt. When you login, there may be a delay. Next, you will hear about 10 seconds of electronic music. Following the music and another delay, You will hear Orca start up, assuming it is set up to run at login. If not, you'll have to run Orca manually the first time. To do this, hit alt+f2, wait about 5 seconds, then type "orca", and hit enter. No quotes. Orca should start. When he's running, hit space on the preferences button, and set him up as you like.
Well put dave.
If you haven't heard the drum sound, remember that ubuntu has to be installed the first time you boot into it if you've used wubi; its all unattended though.
I think Tyler's trouble has to do with his usb headset. I asked him whether he gets sounds when using the speakers or an analog set. Usb headsets are tricky things in Linux. Mine doesn't do as I'd expect, either.
to twkav:
I'd advise you not try to run Ubuntu under Wooby, but install it using unalocated space of 5-7 gb, without screwing up your xp partition. Another thing, I'd advise you use Vinux, formerly known as Vibuntu, instead, this'll resolve your orca starting issue. Another thing, is do not run as admin, or root under Linux, unless absolutely necessary, you can run under a normal user account just fine. Only run as root when you need to do stuff that requires it, such as system updates. This means you having to do some research to make sure that Orca can work on multiple accounts, with different user permissions. It should do so. Just remember to log off and switch between user accounts when you're done with admin tasks.
I got Orca to start at login, and what Wubi did to install/add Ubuntu to the boot loader was this in C:boot.ini:
c:wubildr.mbr="Ubuntu"
Also, I get sound when I use my regular soundcard, which is a Realtec HD board integrated (I think) into the main board.
Hi,
I have a problem with ubuntu. I've installed it, connected it to the internet using an ethernet connection, and it worked. Then, once I performed an update using sudo apt-get update, apt-get upgrade and apt-get dis-upgrade, I wasn't able to connect to the internet at all. its as though it doesn't even notice that I plugged the ethernet cable in. I tried renewing and releasing the IP using ifconfig, but it doesn't work. I am using ubuntu 8.1. Does anyone else experience this problem?
Thanks!
No clue about that, but I've got a rather (stupid, maybe?) question: I am using Vinux as a virtual machine (using vinux 1.31 virtual edition), but how do I get to the equivalent of the Start menu? Vinux is a version of Ubuntu specifically designed to cater to the needs of the blind/VI community, in case anyone doesn't know. I tried the Windows key and F10 without any luck.
In linux, (and its the same for vinux), you need to press alt+F1.
Another strange issue: When I hit CTRL+Alt to redirect input and output back to Windows, Windows acts as if CTRL and Alt are still held down. I had to do a CTRL+Tab to get the keys to not hold themselves down anymore, and no, sticky keys are turned off, both in Vinux and in Windows.
Jesus christe. Glad to see we're now twats ur... I mean twkav's personal support group.
To the dude that was having connectivity issues:
Try route add default gw <gw here>
Then do something like ifconfig eth0 up <ip>
You can also try ifdown eth0
ifup eth0
to reboot the card.
HTH, (You can catch me on msn which is found in profile or email if you have more questions that I might be able to help with.)
Peace

To the dude that was having connectivity issues:
Um, you were helping someone else, so I don't see any difference. Only thing is, I could have started another thread, but since there is one similar to my problem, I decided to add here.
anyway, I'm kind of new with linux so what is GW? Also, I think i figure out the issue with the connectivity. According to a forum I found, ubuntu 8.1 has an issue with the network manager. I wonder if that problem has been resolved with 9.04?
Question about vinux I have the versial addition and when I try to load it up it says that I can't load it it says.VMware Workstation cannot open one of the virtual disks needed by this VM because graphic 722 it is larger than the maximum file size supported by the
host file system. Some remote
file systems do not support files larger than 2 GB, even though the file system on the
server might.
Cannot open the disk 'C:Program FilesVMwareVMware PlayerVinux1.4Vinux.vmdk'
or one of the snapshot disks it depends on.
Reason: The file is too large. why? and I also have to live CD iso image how do I get that to start? Thanks Kevin PS. My file system if fat 32 on my hard drive buy the way.
To post 15:
gw, is gateway, I believe.
to kevinroberts:
Why're you using fat32, instead of ntfs? That'll solve your more than 2 gb file size issue. Its a file system thing, not a VMware thing.
Thank you spike.
gw is gateway.
And ug to ntfs and fat32. Linux should be using ext3, not ntfs.
it's more than possible for it to, but... it makes things a pain in the ass.
To TheCreator:
I was replying to the person who was using their windows OS under Fat32, not NTFS. I wasn't trying to say that Linux should use NTFS, though it does support it. I'd say you could stik with ext3, or go to EXT4, or use RiserFS. Your choice.
Why in the world would anybody still be running windows on fat32? Unless, possibly, they're running 98 or some old OS like that.
there are plenty of reasons to run windows under 32. Just because your to retarded to comprehend them, doesn't mean it's not viable.
and gotcha. I guess I didn't see anything about windows. I just assumed it was still linux. :)
So waht are the differences in these linux file systems?
ext3, EXT4, and RiserFS.
Well the reason I am running windows XP pro under fat 32 is because I am running a mac with boot camp installed on another partision and can anyone tell me how I can fix this problem with VMwair and Vinux? Is there something I can do to the disk file to make it so that it will run? Thanks.
ext3 more secure. if your machine shuts off data will still be preserved not completely lost. Ext4 it is fairly new but adds more security to it I dont know all the details. Reiserfs is faster and is mainly used on filesystems with large amounts of small files. Performance based
here is the link that describes all the benefits for ext4. I'd either go with reiserfs or ext4 personally...
http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Ext4&action=edit§ion=8
Ubuntu 9.04 was recently tested out with the EXT4 filesystem. Here's the url with the info: http://beginlinux.com/server_training/8-ubuntuadmin/1255-crash-testing-ext4-on-ubuntu?tmpl=component&print=1&page=.
The url should work, if it doesn't look on google for the following article title: Crash Testing ext4 on Ubuntu.
Cool thanks for the link guys, I'll check them out. Yeah you do have to install windows in a fat 32 partition if you want to access files stored in the windows partition from with in the mac OS. However i do belive there is something you can install on the mac to get it to see an NTFS partition.
By the way does the ubuntu live CD/Installer have a screenreader built in or am I gonna have to go with vinux for that those purposes? I know once you have ubuntu installed you can install screenreaders.
to monkeypusher69:
I'd say go with Vinux, when the next release is done, they're currently at v1.4. Not only this, but even if you just use the ubuntu 9.04 full release, you'll still have to install it in the same way as vinux. O, and btw, wine, the windows emulator does not work with the Orca Screen Reader. Run the Ubuntu 9.04 or Vinux release, which ever you plan to use, to make sure that all of your hardware is recognized. O, and if you've got a broadcom wireless or wired/ethernet card, you're screwed, there aren't easily installable drivers for it. You can thank broadcom for this. Other than that, you should be good to go.
So if i understand correctly both vinux and ubuntu can be installed with screenreader support? Not too worried about wine as I don't plan on getting rid of my windows partition anytime soon. Well my ephernet card is broadcom, but my wireless card is an intel, so how are the drivers for that?
The drivers for the wireless card should be fine, the wired one, unsure. I've run Vinux on my current laptop, and everything's recognized.
How about C-Media USB headsets? I tried using mine with Ubuntu 8.10 under Wubi, and it didn't work, but it worked just fine with the Realtec HD Audio chipset on the main board.
Ok all sence I have a fat 32 windows partision installed under the mac os will I have to redo the hole thing for it to use a MTFS partistion withthe the thing that that poster was talking for the MAC to see it? Thanks Kevin and oh vinux is saved as a zip file if you want the vm one and the iso I havn't figgured out how to get that to work yet. Any ideas and to boot from a cd if I have boot camp installed do I still have to use F 12 or use the mac way to boot from a cd I try holding down c while booting and nothing. Thanks Kevin
You don't hold down C, you press it once.
When after the start up tone or during the sound? Thanks Kevin
After the startup sound.
Hi...
I'd like to give Ubuntu ago but I'm having a problem with the sound when i boot up the live cd.
Well... you guessed it probably, no sound plays.
I'm using a connexant hd audio card.
its a crap one but... as its built-in with this crap laptop, I don't really have any choice.
some assistance would be appreciated.
yeah if you have a fat 32 partition, you will have to reformat the drive to get ti to be an NTFS partition. There is a convert Partition command in xp but i tried it once and it knocked out some lisences for trial software i was trying and i had to re install windows to actually get my 30 day trial. So just saying it may hnot be worth thte hassle to try it taht way.
Is there an Anti Virus program that can be installed in linux but can also still scan a Windows Partition? I am thinking if this is possible i can create my own live cd with this stuff pre installed and use it to scan a PC, instead of doing it in safe mode where the PC is in accessable.
I believe that Clam XAV can scan a Windows partition, though I may be wrong. The only problem I see with creating a live cd is that you'd have to update the deffs every few days and keep the cd current. To the person with the audio card and no sound issue, have you checked the ubuntu forums and know that there aren't any workarounds to get the sound to work, and you're sure that sound works in Windows? As for the usb sound issue, unsure if usb headsets work in Ubuntu, myself. I've noticed that when I've put the live cd of vinux or ubuntu on this machine, only the left alt and ctrl keys work when I use my external keyboard. Unsure if this is the same for the internal laptop keyboard.
Ok, tested out Vinux, 1.2, yes, i'll download v1.5 when it comes out, and I noticed that indeed, only the left alt key works as its supposed to, the right alt key does not. Instead it is used at least on my system to do allot of the weird simbols such as the trademark or double dagger. Does anyone know why this is, and how to fix it?
Here's a possible resolution for my specific right alt key not working as its supposed to issue. This should work for anyone else whose got the same problem. http://www.zolved.com/synapse/view_content/28017/Fix_your_right_Alt_key_in_Ubuntu
hth
thanks i'll check out clam xav and see waht the deal is. I plan on keeping it on a partition on my system and keeping it upto date and then just make a updated live cd everytime i have a job to do.
Well all I tryed to run the VM addication of vinux on my Mac useing VMware fusion and it worked. But the only thing I have is when I tryed to use festival speech I get this weird crackal sound and can't understand what the speech is say Espeek works just fine though so why is festal not working? Thanks Kevin.
